American Express has created an innovative program – The Members Project – allowing their Cardmembers to vote for an inventive idea to bring good to our world. United Way International was matched with a micro lending project that would help 50,000 families move towards financial stability and a better quality of life. Thanks to votes from hundreds of people across the country, our project, “50,000 families up from poverty,” has now been selected as one of the Top 25 projects and advanced to the second round of voting. If you are an American Express cardholder, please vote by July 22 to help United Way and these families. For each American Express Cardmember that registers and votes, American Express will donate $1 towards the winning idea – up to $5 million.

The United eWay Users’ Conference held in Chicago, IL June 26-28, 2007 was a huge success, with more than 250 attendees. Cynthia Hunt of PricewaterhouseCoopers kicked off the Corporate Connections Forum, where over 40 attendees from more than 20 corporations participated. Participants were a blend of users (and non-users) of various United eWay solutions and represented centrally and locally managed workplace campaigns. Highlights included sharing best practices, presentations from a panel of professionals, and a Case Study delivered by USAA. There was tremendous interest in ongoing engagement opportunities that would provide open communication between corporate users, their Local United Way partners and United eWay. The group was so engaged with their topics, they opted out of the final conference general session in order to extend their own agenda and continue the valuable dialogue. Thank you to all participants and attendees! |

How better to impact communities than to start at home? Nationwide is helping improve the communities where their employees live and work through a commitment to early education in partnership with United Way’s Born Learning campaign. Each year, Nationwide distributes more than 1200 “Having a Baby?” packages to associates expecting a baby. Nationwide’s Occupational Health Nurses distribute these packets which contain materials to guide parents through the process of maternity benefits, maternity leave, health insurance forms and relevant policy information as well as to ensure a smooth transition into parenthood.
Thanks to the strategic thinking of Nationwide and United Way of Central Ohio, these packets also include Born Learning materials. United Way of Central Ohio spearheaded this innovative partnership in 2005, and Nationwide was quick to jump at this opportunity to equip their expectant associates with additional tools and resources for raising a healthy baby and exposing them to early learning opportunities.
Packets are customized depending on the Nationwide location to offer specific resources and contact information for their local United Way. Nationwide associates at the Central Ohio location receive Born Learning materials including Kidcare Basic (tips, tricks and answers to help connect with children), Your Child @ Series (a guide to help parents see what stage of development their babies are and how to best help their baby grow and learn), a sleep diary, and several other helpful resources.
“At Nationwide, we understand how critical it is for each of our associates to understand the breadth of impact United Way has in their communities,” said Connie Argus, Director of Associate and Community Programs, “Our partnership with United Way on Born Learning has provided us with a wonderful opportunity to help thousands of our associates experience United Way at work and realize a concrete benefit from one of their programs.”
Nationwide has also shown their dedication to their associates and their community by hosting Lunch & Learn sessions promoting early childhood education and tips for engaging early development, and including information on Born Learning in Nationwide Healthcare Fairs.
Nationwide is not only committed to United Way and their communities, but they are dedicated to offering their employees the tools and resources to develop strong families and healthy children. Thank you, Nationwide, for your commitment to improving lives and building stronger communities. |
