Spirit of America winner, Xcel Energy, created an innovative partnership with United Way using their naming rights to Xcel Energy Center, a National Hockey League venue in St. Paul, MN, home of the Minnesota Wild. In an effort to educate both their employees and the community on United Way’s mission, Xcel donated $182,000 worth of in-arena promotion as well as 64 TV and 32 radio commercials during nationally televised hockey games to promote Born Learning, Success By 6 and United Way – achieving 5 million unique views of United Way messaging.

Xcel Energy also sponsored two United Way events at Xcel Energy Center. More than 500 people attended a United Way skating party held for Xcel employees, their families, and emerging leaders from other local corporations. Xcel also sponsored a United Way night at a Minnesota Wild game. Eighteen thousand fans were treated to United Way educational messaging through volunteer booths, brochures – even the on-ice entertainment between game periods was a spelling game involving the entire crowd. Hundreds of Xcel volunteers worked the events – manning booths, handing out United Way materials and talking to the fans about the importance of United Way. Watch a video highlighting this event. Thanks Xcel Energy, for going above and beyond in your commitment to improving lives and building stronger communities.
