United Way Women's Leaders storm the Hill
On February 28, 2008, more than 120 United Way Women’s Leadership Council volunteers and staff representing 22 states showed the strength of the United Way movement by visiting Capitol Hill and advocating to extend the 2-1-1 network nationwide. The event represented the largest group of United Way volunteers ever sent to Capitol Hill. More than 90 meetings were held with members and staff from both the House and Senate, and several additional bill cosponsors were secured as a result of these visits. The Congressional relationships built over the course of the day will be critical to United Way’s future advocacy efforts. Many of the event’s organizers are key community business leaders, including representatives from Deloitte Services LP, IBM Corporation, Wachovia Corporation, Principal Financial Group, Procter & Gamble, Merrill Lynch & Co., Inc. and U.S. Bank.

$6 million Lilly Endowment grant for research and training for future leaders in U.S. and internationally
United Way of America and the Center on Philanthropy at Indiana University are teaming up to develop a new partnership made possible by a $6 million grant from Lilly Endowment Inc. to United Way. This collaboration will initiate critical new research and training courses that will help develop future United Way leaders worldwide.
More specifically, this cutting-edge research will be conducted in an effort to better understand changes in philanthropy and the roles and relationships of local United Way organizations. Based on the newfound research, the Fund Raising School will develop curriculum and design training to help United Way create vigorous educational experiences for United Way professionals across the globe.
“Both the Center on Philanthropy and United Way of America will benefit from this partnership in exciting ways,” said N. Clay Robbins, president of Lilly Endowment. “The Center on Philanthropy is a national leader in discovering and understanding philanthropy trends and translating that new knowledge into effective practices for nonprofits. United Way provides important leadership in identifying and meeting community needs in communities across the country. By joining forces, they will gain new insights into the changing dynamics of philanthropy and how United Ways can build on emerging opportunities.”
